Experience a unique Keralan tradition with Pathimugham, the reddish heartwood shavings of the Sappanwood tree (Caesalpinia sappan). This natural ingredient is widely used across Kerala to prepare a distinct type of drinking water.
- Traditional Keralan Use: Pathimugham is traditionally added to boiling drinking water, infusing it with a beautiful, pale pinkish hue and a very subtle, slightly earthy or woody taste. This infused water, often referred to as ‘Dahashamani’, is commonly consumed throughout the day in homes and restaurants across the region.
- How to Use: Simply add a small pinch (a little goes a long way) of the Pathimugham wood shavings to your drinking water as it boils. Let it simmer for a few minutes to release its color and subtle essence. It can be consumed warm or cooled.
- Natural Source: Derived entirely from the heartwood of the Caesalpinia sappan tree. It has also been historically used as a natural dye.
- Appearance: Consists of small, reddish-brown wood chips or shavings.
